The food sector represents a third of global greenhouse gas emissions; from production and processing through to transportation, feeding the world causes a huge amount of pollution. As such, food companies are under mounting pressure from customers, investors, and regulators to reduce their carbon emissions. And fast.

In response, many are making lofty commitments to their stakeholders about their transmission goals, without any real plan to get there. Yet, these food companies are missing the key tools in their armoury to track and mitigate their carbon footprints, ultimately helping them align with sustainability goals and consumer expectations. This is where My Emissions comes in; taking a pragmatic and commercial approach, it is poised to revolutionise how the food sector approaches carbon emissions.

Founded in 2021 by Forbes 30-under-30 co-founders Matthew Isaacs and Nathan Bottomley (who met whilst studying at Cambridge University), My Emissions has quickly emerged as a leader in the field with its platform that’s aimed at helping restaurants, food brands, and catering companies measure, communicate, and ultimately reduce their carbon footprint. Rather than putting the onus on consumers (who are still largely driven by price and taste), My Emissions’ tool empowers food companies to make informed decisions to reduce their carbon footprint by focussing on the elements that matter most.

My Emissions provides unparalleled speed in reporting and identifying opportunities for improvement by seamlessly integrating with existing workflows and systems including recipe management, inventory management, and POS systems, making it easy for companies to incorporate sustainability into their operations without disrupting day-to-day activities. This nuanced approach enables companies to make informed decisions that not only benefit the environment but also enhance their reputation and appeal to environmentally-conscious consumers.

My Emissions’ methodology aligns to the GHG Protocol and was presented to DEFRA’s food data transparency partnership in December 2023 to help set the standard for emissions reporting and eco-labelling in the UK. This market-leadership has translated to significant commercial wins, including becoming the official carbon labelling partner of Just Eat, as well as landing clients including FSC Group, AB World Foods, Selfridges, and the Good Eating Company (part of Sodexo Group).

The market for sustainability solutions in the food sector is growing fast, driven by a combination of regulatory pressures, consumer demand, and corporate sustainability initiatives. With significant tailwinds supporting growth, My Emissions has ample opportunity for expansion and scale and food companies and beyond seek a comprehensive solution to affordably measure emissions of individual products and accurately report their annual Scope 3 emissions.

We’ve backed them as part of their £1.3m Seed round, led by Hambro Perks, as they continue on their important mission to decarbonise the food industry. This latest funding enables Matt and Nathan to expand their team to deliver the most targeted carbon assessment platform for the food sector, and ultimately give companies all the tools they need to reduce emissions and achieve their net-zero targets

With a unique business model, a talented team, and a market ripe for disruption, My Emissions is well-positioned to drive meaningful change in the food sector and beyond. We’re excited to be a part of their journey and look forward to seeing the impact they will make in the years to come.
